Ruh roh Apple – Google has an App Store coming with Chrome OS

What else can I say?

An *OPEN* Operating System on an *OPEN* app store and HTML5 support and Flash?   omg..

Hey Apple investors, “sell, sell, sell!!!”.

Article here

FTA:

Google showed off a preview of the Google Chrome Store during the opening keynote at its Google I/O 2010 developer conference. The final version will appear in a release of the developer build of the Chrome browser in the near future, Google vice president for product management Sundar Pichai said. It will also be natively supported on Google’s forthcoming Chrome OS targetted at netbooks.

….

The store integrates the existing large thumbnails used on the New Tab page in Google Chrome with Google’s Checkout technology to allow people to acquire (and, in many cases, pay for) HTML5-based applications. “Once you set it up, it’s normally one click to add an application.”

While Apple has recently been making headlines for its refusal to support Flash on its devices, Google is taking a much more positive view of the Adobe technology. Apps in the Chrome Web store can be built on standard web technologies, including Flash, and we will support them all in the Chrome Web store.

The Apple biased perspective on Gizmodo’s iPhone prototype acquirement and Apple’s reaction

Betanews has an article up here with a little more meat on the whole Gizmodo vs Apple story(many of these items were touched on in the previous Jon Stewart post)

I few interesting items of note FTA:

But first the news-heavy recap: An Apple employee lost the iPhone prototype in mid-March, while celebrating his birthday. The finder later sold the device to Gizmodo, reportedly for $5,000, although the unsealed court documents list the sum as $8,500 with promise of a possible bonus later on. Gizmodo published a series of stories, with photos and videos, starting on April 19. On April 23, San Mateo police officers raided the home of Gizmodo editor Jason Chen. Court documents refer to him as “suspect Chen.”

and…

According to the unsealed documents, Apple’s CEO  personally called Lam (Editor in Chief @ Gizmodo), asking that Gizmodo return the iPhone prototype. Lam refused, demanding that Apple first document ownership. What? A call from Jobs isn’t verification enough?

Curious as to where the source of these  ‘unsealed documents’ references come from?  Or better yet, want to take a look yourself?

A very interesting list of items that the police removed.  I’m really struggling to understand why these items were important or related… I mean business cards?  WTF..

Were they trying to seize any electronic documents he had pertaining to discoveries Chen et al had made about the prototype phone?

Hey Steve, is your HQ in a bunker yet?

New bill demands “neutral net neutrality,” hamstrings FCC

New bill demands “neutral net neutrality,” hamstrings FCC.

FTA

In an effort to make network neutrality impossible for the FCC temperament, Congressman Cliff Stearns (R-FL) yesterday introduced a new bill (PDF) that would require “neutral network neutrality.” And no, that’s not a typo.

The bill would make it difficult for the FCC to proceed with its preferred approach to network neutrality, “reclassifying” Internet access as a telecommunications service over which the FCC has “common carrier” authority.

Awwww time to pull on the puppet strings in gov’t there big business?

What a shitty, corrupt system.  You people are soul-less.   I hope people throw rotten fruit at you when they see you Mr. Stearns.

Console Bad Company 2 gets new game mode 4 player co-op!

Console Bad Company 2 gets new mode, PC servers hit snag.

FTA:

On the official forums, the problem became clear: what would happen to the servers? “The problem we have on PC is that all our servers are dedicated with providers,” an Associate Producer of the game wrote. “Changing a server from Conquest 32 players to Onslaught 4 players cuts out 28 player slots from the total amount available. This could have a dramatic affect on the PC online environment if enough servers changed to Onslaught.” They are looking into ways of bringing the content to the PC without asking people to effectively give up their servers to a smaller experience.

Hey EA – I’ve got a solution … open up dedicated servers so that we can host our own!    Or maybe Peer to Peer connections?

The no BS guide to Jailbreaking iPhone OS 3.1.3

Download this program => It’s called Spirit (win or mac)

Windows download is here

Mac download is here

1. Plug iphone into computer

2. Close itunes

3. Run spirit.exe (verified virus free)

4. At this point you might get some lame error about some shitty .dll, what you can do is Google that and find yourself coming up with answers like these:

OS 4.0 (the second coming of Christ) is going to be out soon and the cult needs to come and line up (yet again) for another sip of our sanctimonious kool-aid. Why bother with Jailbreak? OS 4 is going to bring world peace…

or

You need to copy libeay32.dll to the c:\windows\system32 folder (it won’t be there currently) and they tell you to do this from a path in your C:\Program files (x86) folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support)

This didn’t work with or without a reboot.

Another *fix* is to run the program in Windows 98 Compatibility mode – I had no success with this one either.

I did determine through these search results that this .dll belongs to an OpenSSL software package and that if you install this free software on your OS, it will install the correct dll in the correct location and allow spirit.exe to find it properly (fixing the problem).

5. Once you launch the software, it will detect both the type of iphone you’ve connected and the version of firmware it is currently running. In my case, a 3g iphone with the 3.1.3 version firmware.

Click the Jailbreak button and you’re pretty much done (computer side is done extremely quickly).

The rest is on the device itself. At this point you will see some interesting action on the phone itself with a mid-screen load bar. Just let it do it’s thing it takes only a few minutes.

You can gather more information on the process by clicking here

Direct link to OpenSSL software package

Happy Jailbreaking!

NOTE: You may or may not need to download and install the C++ Redistributable via the OpenSSL download page.

Google Chrome beta speeds up, adds built-in Flash support

Hey Steve, you’re going to need to come up with a few more “thoughts” on Flash…

FTA:

The cooperation is portrayed as part of a larger collaboration between Google, Adobe and Mozilla to create a new plugin API that aims to solve many of the problems with plugins today. The standard would determine how Flash and other plugins could behave and would, if realized, make plugins as fast, secure and stable as regular HTML. Flash would fit in more tightly with regular website design as a result, Google explained.

Dear Steve Jobs (and crew)…

you are =>NOT<= in a position to tell people about “OPEN” technology.

Why not?  Because you operate one of the most locked down mediums I can think of it not THE most (locked down).

Ever heard of an API?   Well if Adobe isn’t getting with the times as per your conclusions in this letter, than you are a complete noob when it comes to OPEN standards.

See, companies like Google have it right.  It’s about building a foundation and establishing your product and letting people plug into it as they so desire.  Letting people with good ideas tie into your product makes it better and more functional and dare I say, more innovative.

Another word that you are not allowed to use unless you can show me one example of how you have innovated anything since the iPod.

The iPad?  Give me a break – did you really launch with that name given the initial feedback?   #itampon anyone?    Ever heard of Twitter?   How could you NOT have put OS X on it?

How?   No USB?  Really?

No way to interface with standard OPEN devices?

No way to output to standard OPEN devices?

The iPhone?   Guess what geniuses – it was NOT your idea to let people build apps.  It was ours and we screamed and yelled at you to get it.  If the Nexus One launched at the same time as the iPhone you would have been destroyed.  How long was the iPhone out for before you guys finally allowed 3rd party apps?   A year?  A bit longer?  But sorry, you cannot take credit for this feature which is now your biggest marketing pitch.

I have an 3G iphone .. it’s junk.  But you’ve got me locked into a contract.  The only way I can make this thing useful is to jailbreak it so I can make it do very complicated tasks like:

1. Voice over IP (oooohhhhh)

2.  Tethering (ahhhhhhhh)

3.  Download >10 MB apps via 3g

4.  Multitasking (which, I pray for your sake, that this version does not work better than the version you are going to roll out FINALLY in OS 4.0

5.  Heck there’s even an Jailbreak app store where people PAY for apps (the misfits of your *OPEN* system).

Why is it up to you to decide what people want to do with your OPEN platform?  What are you?   China?

How much innovation can exist in a world where  people are limited to only do the things on your platform which you have pre-approved?   This is just a new form of censorship ‘cept…

.. you are not a government, you are a corporation.

If you want to try to be responsible, why don’t you start by STOPPING the way you do business.   You push consumption without real purpose.

You are constantly trying to push people into buying your “new” hardware while the old stuff goes to waste.  Instead of integration, you release YET ANOTHER hardware device which “duplicates functionality seen on other devices”.

Wouldn’t it be smarter and more efficient to have the same features available in different form factors and portability options?

Name a single practical application of the iPad (I’ll wait…)

What does it do that other devices you offer do not?  It has a better screen but other features are lacking?  Small gains and some losses?

What about in the market place?   I paid $500 for my netbook it does infinitely more tasks (at the SAME time) and most of them better than this great ‘revolutionary’ product offering.  OMG I can touch the screen!!!!   High tech!

Some of the things you block make sense but MOST do not.  Your qualification system sucks and most people know it.  Especially developers…

Give us one good reason why you blocked Google Voice?  One… and a real one not the:

“This duplicates functionality which currently exists on the iPhone”

Because that’s retarded.   How can Skype be permitted but not Google Voice?  It has most if not all of the same features..

Currently on YOUR iPhone (that I’m leasing unfortunately) I’m running Skype with your legit App Store and I’m paying like $10 per month for unlimited Long Distance in North America (Wifi and 3g) AND this includes a phone number where people can call me back on their Skype enabled devices for FREE.

As far as I know Google Voice operates in a similar manner.   You get a phone number and you get voicemail (just like Skype) and people can call it.   I have a Skype phone number that people can call the exact same way.

So…What is so different between these apps that one is allowed while the other is not?  Both use a phone network via data…  and pushing calls through data is simply much more accessible and affordable for the modern city dweller.

Air Time = free (no additional cost to data plan as it uses the Internet)

Long distance calls = free (with $2.95 additional cost per month plan in North America)

And you can do both of these things from the Phone using Skype.  How much of Skype do you own?  Why the special treatment?

Betanews has some interesting thoughts on this matter as well:

Which Platform is More Closed?

I won’t critique all six no-Flash reasons but grab a couple to make the point: The reality Jobs evokes isn’t the only viewpoint. Jobs begins with “Open”:

Adobe’s Flash products are 100-percent proprietary. They are only available from Adobe, and Adobe has sole authority as to their future enhancement, pricing, etc. While Adobe’s Flash products are widely available, this does not mean they are open, since they are controlled entirely by Adobe and available only from Adobe. By almost any definition, Flash is a closed system. Now I’ll rewrite the same paragraph applied to Apple:

Apple’s iPhone OS products are 100-percent proprietary. They are only available from Apple, and Apple has sole authority as to their future enhancement, pricing, etc. While iPhone OS products are widely available, this does not mean they are open, since they are controlled entirely by Apple and available only from Apple. By almost any definition, iPhone/iPod touch/iPad is a closed system.

Real Ubuntu “error”

This error is confusing …  Is this good or bad?   Cannot remember for the life of me what I was doing to throw it.
